BMW i8

A plug -in hybrid as a sports car - the new BMW i8. He was initially a concept study to test further developments in the energy efficiency of automotive engineering. So far, the Bavarian carmaker had already incorporated a number of energy-saving technologies in their models. Under the designation BMW Vision EfficientDynamics the BMW i8 gets but from the very beginning an overall concept that has been designed with energy-saving point of view. For driving in the BMW i8 provide a compact 1.5 - liter three- cylinder gasoline engine with TwinPower Turbo technology and a powerful electric motor. The lithium-ion battery can be recharged at any household outlet. The motor outputs show a balanced mix of both drives. • petrol engine, 231 hp, 250 Nm of torque, rear-wheel drive, fuel tank capacity 30 liters • Two electric motors, usable battery capacity 5.2 kWh, 98 lithium-polymer cells, Front wheel drive, range in pure electric mode depending on driving style and route between 30 and 50 kilometers • Total output of both engines 362 hp, maximum total torque 800 Nm, acceleration from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 4.4 seconds, top speed limited to 250 km / h. The average fuel consumption over long distances with a beginning not charged traction battery is around eight liters. If the battery is full, fuel consumption is reduced to less than four liters and a CO2 emission of less than 100 GKM. With sporty driving style to the BMW i8 animated, the consumption falls considerably higher. The air resistance in this futuristically designed coupe is 0.26 CW. By the use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the body structure, the weight reduction compared to steel by about 50 percent. An aluminum body would still be 30 percent heavier than the BMW i8.
